New Delhi: Yet again, it’s the second day in a row when North India found is out of power. This time the effect seems to be worse as  crisis affected the East too.  Three major supply grids which supply power to 19 different states had tripped.  At about 2 pm, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde promised that the situation would return to normal within 90 minutes.  More than 600 million Indians were affected with this blackout.  As yesterday same is today that hundreds of trains stopped in their tracks. Delhi Metro being the heart of Delhi has stopped running as well and is at halt from more than an hour.

Yesterday’s power outage is definitely the worst in a decade for India which had affected seven states and Delhi.  Where as Today’s blackout is described as one of the world’s largest which began at about 1.30 pm.  The Northern, Eastern and North Eastern supply tripped in quick succession.  The crisis was allegedly triggered after four  states – Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab  and UP – drew much more than their assigned share of  power.  “I have told states using more power than they are meant to stop it.  They shall be punished,” said Mr Shinde.

The supply to Delhi at 1.30 pm was reduced to an all-time low of 40 MW against its demand of 4000 MW,  bringing  the capital to its knees.

The states affected today are: Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, J&K, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, UP, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and the seven North Eastern states.

100 MWs of emergency power is being provided to VVIP areas in the capital. The priority is to get hospitals, traffic signals and the metro fully up and running -some passengers are trapped inside trains which need a burst of power to allow them to get to the nearest station.

The back to back blackouts  have made international headlines and underscored India’s weak infrastructure and inability to meet energy demands. News Agency like Reuters are already talking about it.

This week seems to be a Dark Week for India. Hope everything gets back on track soon.
